About Fr Matthew P. Schneider, LC

In 2001, I traveled from Calgary, Canada to join the Legion. Since then I’ve been all over North America and spent some time in Rome. I currently reside in Washington doing a bunch of writing and taking care of the community while studying my Licentiate in Theology (between Masters and Doctorate). I’m most well-known on Instagram and Twitter where I have about 6,500 and 40,000 followers respectively.

Déjà Vu

As we settled into classes here in Rome I had a “déjà vu” experience. Or, more properly, a brother reminded me that we were both having one. Once again, I was in charge of cleaning the bathrooms each day he … Continue reading

Each Called by Name

When we think of the various spiritualities in the Church we can easily compare them on a superficial level of structure, of founders or of nationalities. I think one of the easiest is to explain the differences by the primary … Continue reading

“Christ Our King!”

5:05 a.m., curled up in one corner of the bed, covered by several blankets, I calmly sleep. Then, “Christ our King!” echoes through the room and I respond “Your kingdom come!” through my semi-dazed state. One Legionary told me that … Continue reading

The Bridge

I recently visited the town of Spoleto, with the rest of the community. After touring the city itself we hiked up the MonteLuco beside it to have lunch beside a Franciscan convent that goes back to St Francis himself. Reaching … Continue reading

Je ne Parle pas Français, Io Parlo L’Italiano

As a schoolboy, my most dreaded hour was the hour of French class. I was not one who hated all school, but French was completely unbearable and seemingly useless. And my marks showed it; French was always my lowest mark, … Continue reading

You Can See it in Their Eyes

Some things we do in the seminary might seem rather rudimentary, but they can have surprising consequences. A few years back I was studying in Thornwood, NY and I had to pick up a fellow Legionary at JFK airport. Unfortunately, … Continue reading

Little crosses

“Apart from the cross, there is no other ladder by which we may get to heaven.” –St Rose of Lima (CCC 618) I found this quote studying for Christology in the catechism. There are many great theologians who have spoken … Continue reading

The Sneeze

Unlike my usual entries where I have a brief reflection on seminary life, I want to pass on a little story another Legionary sent me. It is a great example of creativity in evangelizing that I think is appropriate for … Continue reading

Poverty, Chastity and Obedience

If someone asked you what makes a religious different, how would you answer? Well, nuns and monks, they wear special clothes. Religious don’t get married and they live in communities. I think the real difference is that we have been … Continue reading
