It is quite an experience! Coming around the vestibule, and out through the gargantuan doors down the main aisle of St Peter’s carrying a huge processional cross. The whole procession behind follows the cross high above our heads. Only a cardinal and 4 bishops, it’s not such a big event – for Rome. Still, somehow the majesty just overtakes you.
Even though it was only Easter vespers, the procession needs stop twice on the way to the altar of the chair (behind the main papal altar): first to bless everyone with holy water, then to incense Mary. By the time we get to Mary, the weight is wearing out my arms. I keep going. Sore arms are such a little sacrifice to offer up.
Then, then, I sit and wait most of the ceremony. Only one other brother had less work. Br Andrew was responsible for carrying the holy water. (Br Andrew is a unique joy to our community: while 95% of other brothers have been hoping I don’t mention them, especially by name, he has been almost begging me to include him.)
Such moments provide an opportunity to serve. After the washing of the feet, Jesus said that the greatest will be those who serve.
