The Primacy of Love

“Without love, deeds, even the most brilliant, count as nothing.” St. Therese of Lisieux

During my second year in the seminary, I spent a little time in the hospital with a leg infection from a soccer injury. Although I had 3 shifts of nurses, two really stood out. The night shift nurse was not happy to be there and she let all the patients on the floor know it…once a man in the room next door fell off his bed, and this nurse said in a loud voice, “You fell again? I can’t stand this night shift, I am really tired of this job, etc, etc…” One of the day shift nurses was the polar opposite. She came by several times just to ask if we needed anything,…she continually brought us bowls of ice cream and did everything with a lot of love and a warm smile. Her efforts made the pain less painful and I remain very grateful for her kindness.
