The Sneeze

Unlike my usual entries where I have a brief reflection on seminary life, I want to pass on a little story another Legionary sent me. It is a great example of creativity in evangelizing that I think is appropriate for us in the Legion and Regnum Christi.

They walked in tandem, each of the ninety-two students filing into the already crowded auditorium. With their rich maroon gowns flowing and the traditional caps, they looked almost as grown up as they felt. Dads swallowed hard behind broad smiles, and Moms freely brushed away tears. This class would NOT pray during the commencements, not by choice, but because of a recent court ruling prohibiting it.

The principal and several students were careful to stay within the guidelines allowed by the ruling. They gave inspirational and challenging speeches, but no one mentioned divine guidance and no one asked for blessings on the graduates and their families. The speeches were nice, but they were routine until the final speech received a standing ovation.

A solitary student walked proudly to the microphone. He stood still and silent for just a moment, and then, it happened.

All 92 students, every single one of them, suddenly SNEEZED!!!!

The student on stage simply looked at the audience and said,

“GOD BLESS YOU”

And he walked off the stage…

The audience exploded into applause. This graduating class from Eastern Shore District High School in Musquodoboit Harbour , Nova Scotia found way to invoke God’s blessing. I think God will bless them whether the courts approve or not.

About Fr Matthew P. Schneider, LC

In 2001, I traveled from Calgary, Canada to join the Legion. Since then I’ve been all over North America and spent some time in Rome. I currently reside in Washington doing a bunch of writing and taking care of the community while studying my Licentiate in Theology (between Masters and Doctorate). I’m most well-known on Instagram and Twitter where I have about 6,500 and 40,000 followers respectively.

One Response to The Sneeze

According to Snopes this is not the correct version of what happened. There was a sneeze and a small group of students responded with “bless you” as they had arranged before the time
