It isn’t every day that a Pope decides to resign. In fact it is more like every millennium.
So my reaction to the news this morning was probably like many other Catholics. First, it this true? Second, can he really do that?
The answer is yes to both.
Having been blessed to benefit from the teaching of Benedict the Pope and Ratzinger the man for most of my adult life, I’m confident that he reached this decision in wisdom and holiness.
In accepting the Papacy, Benedict received immense shoes to fill. So will his successor.
The Holy Father has my gratitude and prayers.
