The Room

What does a room say about someone?

We can all remember that guy in college who we assumed was a biology major from the stuff growing in his dorm room. We can all remember a film where there is this all-powerful boss who sits in his spacious office atop a skyscraper looking down on the world. We can all remember the squalor in Oliver Twist.

Even in little things, you can see what is important to this person. Someone who is organized will have everything nice and compartmentalized while another might just leave a dirty-clothes mountain on the bed.

In the Legion we have very simple rooms: a desk, a bed, a bookshelf, a cabinet, and a three-piece bathroom. I think it shows how we live poverty:  It has nothing we don’t need. At the same time it shows how we can stay clean and organized since everything then has its place. I am sure my room has more books than average; I guess I am a bit of a nerd.

In Rome we switch rooms every year to help us stay detached. This year I moved right onto the ground floor and right in front of the chapel. What a grace God is giving me.

About Fr Matthew P. Schneider, LC

In 2001, I traveled from Calgary, Canada to join the Legion. Since then I’ve been all over North America and spent some time in Rome. I currently reside in Washington doing a bunch of writing and taking care of the community while studying my Licentiate in Theology (between Masters and Doctorate). I’m most well-known on Instagram and Twitter where I have about 6,500 and 40,000 followers respectively.
