What is the true source of moral decisions? Let me share one small example.
When my mom fell ill, I got into Calgary at 3pm, my aunt and cousin picked me up and drove me straight to the hospital. I went straight into to see mom. A little later we were discussing if anyone would stay the night in ICU. I volunteered immediately.
The nurses told me probably 5 times that evening that this wasn’t necessary. My only response was that if the roles were reversed, she wouldn’t let me stay alone in ICU.
I have passed both philosophical and theological course on morality with flying colors – but none of that came into play. My response that she would do the same for me was what really mattered. And this isn’t pure theory; mom stayed 2 weeks straight in the hospital with me when I was 5 or 6.
We can talk all we want about theories but when push comes to shove, we follow examples more. How we need to build real families.
