“I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies; for the hardest victory is over self.” (Aristotle)
Little acts of self-denial help train the will for greater conquests in virtue, and this can also gain many graces for souls when “offered up with love.” I thought this simple list might be helpful…I am sure we can all add our more personal battles to this list.
- Take a good chunk of time out of your busy day to pray
- Eat a little more of the food you dislike and a little less of what you like.
- Practice moderation while drinking, eating, shopping or using the internet.
- Be extra nice to that family member or co-worker who is most difficult for you.
- Form the habit of doing what is necessary before doing what is pleasing.
- Bite your tongue and hold back that sharp comment that you so desire to say.
- Choose the middle seat in the car or at a booth in a restaurant.
- Do not insist in always having it your way regarding the choice of television shows or opportunities for leisure as a family.
- Make others the center of attention in conversations, taking the focus away from yourself.
- Let go of a grudge!
Father Michael, you are tough. Right but tough… And I can hear you reply that Christ never said his way was easy,. And once again, that’s right!
