“Is it shocking to be baptized?”
Well, I hadn’t thought about it in that way before.
The 6th grader in front of me, already feeling a little spiritually overwhelmed, was trying to wrap her brain around sacrament of Baptism. She’d only been in Catholic school for a few months, so many concepts – like purgatory, fasting, and the sacraments – were totally and almost mind-boggling. (Pray for her; she and her family are coming into the Church this Easter Vigil.)
“Well…when you’re baptized, God comes to live inside you in a new and deeper way! It’s something a person’s soul hasn’t ever experienced before, because that’s the moment He comes to live INSIDE you.”
“But isn’t God already inside you?”
“You’re right- God is everywhere, because He’s God. And also because He made you, it’s like you have His fingerprint on your heart and soul. But when you’re baptized, your soul becomes God’s home. That means He LIVES there.”
Gasp. “Epic!”
She was right. It’s totally epic.
Even more: what a mystery. What a grace- God desires union with our souls, and comes to dwell within us through sanctifying grace. Another mystery to treasure and ponder this Advent!
