HOW FULL IS YOUR TREASURE CHEST?

An old sage once said: “Whoever finds a friend has found a treasure!” Well, in these past 15 days I realized how RICH I am.

How many times we go around moping about all those things we lack or we which we had, but if we stop and dig a little, we are richer than we think. It clicked for me in my recent road trip, I can say, I went “treasure hunting”. Arriving in Cinci (home of the Reds, who lost their ticket to the playoffs) I encountered my friends and sisters in Christ who welcomed me into their new center, cooking and baking special food for me; spending an afternoon with my dear Colombian friend chatting away about everything from motherhood to marketing classes; spending a morning consoling a younger friend who lost her 1st baby girl, Vivian, who was just 3 months old.

From Cinci I went to the “Windy City” where I was received at the airport by a Princess friend (literally, she was dressed up as a princess)! Early Sunday morning I met Sr. Mary Jo, OP, my “Treasure Nun,” and we hopped around Chicago, following my nice who was running the Chicago Marathon. I ended the day on a couch surrounded by friends watching the highlights of Sunday Night Football (no better way to end a day, if I my said so). Having a glass of wine trying to solve the problems of the world with my old friend Mary Hague, who first crossed my path 10 years ago. We’ve been through a lot together, at the same time we have “built” (literally) a lot of things together; from a house in the mountains of Mexico to 9 Holy Week Missions in Chicago.  I ended my trip sitting around a lunch table with an old Mass Media guru friend who was giving me lessons of what “my duties as a good citizen should be”…

I think in these past weeks I realized how rich I am because I found my TREASURE CHEST FULL. In the gospel we read that a man found a treasure in a field, he buried it again, sold all he had and went and bought the field.  It’s time to go out to the field and “un-bury” our own treasure chest and enjoy the treasures that are inside. Let’s dust off those old photo albums and reach out to those friends who make us RICH!
