It need not be dirty

Peter Falk as Colombo

I spent four hours watching television Sunday night.

First, let me assure you that this is not an endorsement of any particular network or program. Second, I recognize that what you are about to read will shock anyone under the age of 40.

Yes. It is true. I was tuned to MeTV, a network that shows vintage shows, some of which appear in black and white. The Sunday evening lineup is amazing (to a fan of old mystery and detective shows): Continue reading

The Sacred Heart and the Eucharist

It is no coincidence that the feast of the Sacred Heart is the Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi. This always made sense to me; I had no problem with it, but the deep, unbreakable connection between these two feasts escaped me until recently. I didn’t realize that Jesus specifically wanted them celebrated one after the other. This is because Eucharist is at the center of the devotion to the Sacred Heart. I was reading Jesus’ words to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, to whom he revealed this devotion, and I came across these famous words: Continue reading

God’s children…

“Fathers and mothers of families should bring up their children virtuously, looking at them rather as God’s children than their own; and to count life and health, and all they possess as loans which they hold of God.” St. Philip Neri

Like a Good Shepherd, lead your children to the green pastures and cool streams of the Sacraments and friendship with Jesus Christ. Show them the way by your example. Give them a positive and strong example of what a Catholic marriage looks like, and remember, Christ has entrusted this souls to you and he is ready and willing to help!

Accepting reality

I was going to be a star.

Of course, I wasn’t alone. Any kid growing up in the early 1960s in Columbus, Ohio was going to be a basketball star and play for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

My dad, my uncle and a couple older cousins had all been college athletes. I would grow up to be six-foot-five and enjoy the speed of a gazelle. I just had to work hard and let my dreams come true. Continue reading

Puebla mission update — June 11

Greetings from Ahuazotepec! We’ve been very blessed these days, weather has been great to work, it hasn’t rained and it hasn’t been very hot. We’re making steady progress on the house, it is fascinating how it is built, it looks like building a real life lego house. Continue reading

God looks at the heart

“Human beings judge one another by their external actions. God judges them by their moral choices.” — CS Lewis

During one of our mission trips in El Salvador, a woman from a very poor village asked if we would be coming back later in the day, because she wanted to give us a gift…I told her that we would not make it back to her home, but invited her to come to the Mass in the village later in the afternoon. So shortly after Mass, she presented me with a huge loaf of bread that she had personally baked later that morning…and these are people that make $5 a day in the coffee fields with barely enough to feed their own family. So powerful!

Smells and Bells

I went to Mass twice this Trinity Sunday. The first was our traditional solemn morning Mass in our seminary chapel. It had it all: a handful of priests concelebrating, a choir of 70 Legionary seminarians, incense, candles, Gregorian chant, the works. The entire Mass was sung in Latin. I felt like I was in Heaven, and I was! Continue reading

Puebla Mission Update

Greetings from Ahuazotepec! Everyone is doing very well, it is great to see the missionaries so motivated to give, so willing to learn. The project advances at a steady pace, but we are a bit behind since we participated in the Corpus Christi procession (3 hours!) yesterday.

Corpus Christi here is celebrated on the Thursday after the feast of the Holy Trinity and the townspeople go all out in the celebration. Continue reading

Nepal Update 3

The field coordinator and I started the week off with assessments while the medical team took a day off to rest. The goal of these assessments was to survey different locations in Dhading district to discover areas that have not yet received the help they require. The first place we visited was an area named Sertung. This area is located near our previous mobile medical unit site of Tipling- so it is also a high mountain region with peaceful mountain views in the morning and cold winds at night. While the region has many health workers, those health workers have been working around the clock to manage the diarrheal outbreak that began shortly after the earthquake. They are exhausted and short on supplies. Continue reading

Sacred Heart and Regnum Christi

The Feast of the Sacred Heart is my favorite feast day because about 2 years ago God gave me a very special grace during the novena of the Sacred Heart, which is still guiding me. I wanted to share a little bit of that light.

For me this feast day is about three things: trust, Christ’s gift, and Regnum Christi. I will explain why I think this, using three paintings.

Jesus I trust in You!

The first image we will look at is the Divine Mercy painting. In this painting the Heart of Jesus is pouring out his grace on those who come near to Him asking for His mercy, in practicing mercy, and trusting in His mercy. Traditionally on the bottom of the image are the words, “Jesus, I trust in you.” Trust is a hard to win and also to give, especially when trust is wounded or lost. But all the same, we seem not to be able to live without it. We have to trust people all over the place, from our neighbor to the cashier at the grocery store. But the trust that we owe Christ is a little different, it goes much deeper. Continue reading
