I hope I don’t shock too many of you with this confession – but when driving in the car I sometimes (not often) listen to “Lite Rock” music. Yes, I’m talking about that blah version of Elton John, Eagles, Doobie Brothers and Crosby, Stills and whoever.
This unfortunate practice happens when I’m in a mood for classical music and the classical station is talking about music instead of playing it, which happens far too often.
And so it was that I got into the car last night and punched the button for blah station one and got – “Christmas” music. Stunned, I punched the button for blah station two and got – “Christmas” music. Double stunned.
Here it is a week before Thanksgiving and you can’t get decent blah music on the radio. And I hasten to add that I really like Christmas music when it is Christmas. Just not yet.
I also would like Christmas music that is, well, tasteful and musical. This seems to be a problem, at least if my experience of trying to listen to seasonal music on my local blah stations is any indication.
There is a lot of Christmas music available. Everyone, from opera stars to rappers to comics, seems to have a Christmas album. But when a station has to play seasonal music 24 hours a day for weeks on end…well…I guess they start playing some pretty marginal stuff to avoid being too repetitive. I mean, who wants to hear “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” every 30 minutes?
As a result of my disturbing experience, I’m swearing off blah radio for the rest of 2014. A week before Christmas I’ll load six Christmas CDs in the car player and they will provide my mobile holiday sound track.
And if that works out, I may break my resolution of never making resolutions and give up blah radio for all of 2015.
