Resolved

It is January 5, and I’m pleased to announce that I have not broken a single New Year’s resolution.  Not one!

Of course, I didn’t make any resolutions and therefore have none to be broken.  Neither did my wife.  (We’re very much of one mind about this.)

Neither of us has ever quite understood the concept of a New Year’s resolution.  I mean, if something is all that important to do, why not do it today?

For example, let’s say I go to the doctor this week, the first week of 2011, and he tells me I need to lower my cholesterol.  Would I wait until January 1, 2012 to change my diet?  Not if I want to stay healthy!

In other words, if something is important to do, I figure I ought to start doing it right now, not on some special day that corresponds to the annual unveiling of a new pocket calendar.

My wife and I have lots of resolutions – better eating, more exercise, stronger relationships with family and friends.  In fact, we are very resolved people.  But none of our resolution is related to January 1.
