Anytime you go on a mission such as we are on here in Haiti, the big question always comes up…whether it is verbalized or not.
Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people?
I am not going to claim to have all the answers. I don’t. Oftentimes I get very frustrated with this very question.
Sometimes it is easier to avoid that question than face it. Why do we try to avoid the question? Perhaps our image of God is a bit skewed. It goes back to asking, “Is God is good?”
Sometimes we need to face these sorts of things so that we allow God a chance to respond. I guess, what I like about a mission trip is that when the question comes to the fore, there is no way to avoid it. The big brown eyes of the child with a fever at the hospital are staring back at you, and you can’t avoid them.
It is way to better face the question, and leave God the space to answer. It’s surprising how personal He can get when we open our vulnerability to Him. I have seen it happening here in Haiti. I have experienced it in my own life.
There will always be things that we don’t understand: why a child dies, why a parent is out of work, why there is so much suffering in the world? But even in all this, we can praise God because He sees and He knows, even if we don’t.
