A gentleman never inflicts pain

“It is almost a definition of a gentleman to say that he is one who never inflicts pain.” (Blessed John Henry Newman)

My two older brothers rarely inflicted pain, (only when I totally deserved it, like after having dumped a large bucket of ice water on my brother from the 2nd floor window). I remember accidentally cutting my oldest brother Tom’s lip with a sand wedge in my back swing, as he was teaching me how to hit that club in 4th grade. His response (5 stitches later) was; “Don’t worry, Mike, a scar is a sign of toughness.” My older brother Jim patiently put up with my endless questioning for help on homework or practical advice on dating girls or on dealing with mom and dad. I definitely got under their skin on our long drives to Myrtle beach and Virginia beach for summer vacation, but for the most part, they held back and tried to come up with fun games to make it work. In short, my two older brothers (and of course my oldest sister) made my childhood one to remember!
