On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”… His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” — John 2: 1-3, 5
Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore,* and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” — Matthew 28: 18-20
I was listening to a talk show on the radio the other day (I cannot remember who was speaking or what program was on) but I distinctly remember the man discussing how followers of the Muslim religion operate politically. He basically said that when they reach a large enough population percentage in any particular county, they actively work to impose Sharia law – their law – in that country. Then he said that Catholics, and all Christians for that matter, can learn a lot from the Muslims.
I don’t know if this is actually how Muslims operate or not, but I cannot say that this type of political approach is wrong. If Muslims do this, they are acting on their belief system, which they believe to be TRUE.
Do we as Catholic and Christians, believe our religion to be TRUE?
In light of the Scripture passages above, I think we should prayerfully consider what the radio show host said. I for one, agree with our mother Mary that we should do whatever Jesus tells us to do – in light of the teachings of our Church which he established. I think the passage from Matthew is quite clear – we are to evangelize throughout the world and spread the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Catholics are a large percentage of the population, and from the poll results in recent elections, I think far too many of us have bought into the political correctness of our age – thinking religion is a private matter, and that “I shouldn’t impose my beliefs upon others, nor should I vote for candidates that do.”
We must remember Jesus commandment when we cast our votes for the leaders of our country who will shape our political future – especially in the primaries yet to take place—as well as in the November presidential election. Which candidate/s do you think will bring about the cultural change talked about by our Lord? As yourself that question before you pull the lever or mark the box. Then say a Hail Mary for wisdom, and, with faith in TRUTH, cast your vote.
