“The great thing to remember is that, though our feelings come and go, his love for us does not.” (C.S. Lewis)
I had the blessing last Fall of helping a woman with breast cancer prepare for her final journey to Christ. She had two boys and in spite of being in a lot of pain and on heavy medication, she totally gave of herself to them. One day, she put all of the pills she was taking on the table in front of me and broke down in tears, saying, “Fr. Michael, this is so hard, and I am not sure I can take it much longer…it is so difficult and I have no energy anymore!” At that moment, her son shouted out as he was running down the stairs, “Mom, mom,…the funniest thing just happened. I was looking out the window, and a squirrel was stuck in gutter…it looked at me and tried so hard to get out, it was so funny.” As her son approached the kitchen, this lady wiped away her tears and put on a happy face filled with love. He had no idea what his mom was really feeling!
Christ loves us intensely. Even though the sins of humanity weigh heavily on his Sacred Heart, he is hyper-focused on trying to make his love permeate our hearts, 24/7, all the time! Never doubt this love. It is real, it is true, and it wants to be eternal!
