A beautiful beginning — the renewal convention

The communications director for our organization has many inspiring and fun opportunities.  And, yes, sometimes there are yucky things to deal with, but the hope and joy of the mission ALWAYS outshines the not-so-fun stuff.

Well…this week is the Regnum Christi Renewal Convention 2016 (North American Territory).  And my assignment is to be an observer and share some thoughts on what is happening.

I am so blessed.  I’m spending the week with more than 120 beautiful people who love their Catholic faith, love the Church and love Regnum Christi.  These are my kind of people, precisely the people who ought to be sorting out the future of our Movement.

Some common themes permeated the introductory remarks by Fr John Connor LC, our territorial director who is presiding over the convention; and Kerrie Rivard, who is the Executive Leader of the North American Renewal Commission (she is the person who pretty much made the convention happen).

  • We are called to trust – in the Holy Spirit and in each other.
  • None of us is perfect and none of us is “qualified” individually to write the statutes of Regnum Christi. But together….
  • We have to listen to the Holy Spirit speaking through others.
  • We are becoming who we are called to be through communion with one another.

This isn’t about any of us getting our way, convincing others we are right or fighting for our “facts” to prevail.  The Holy Spirit wants to bring us to a place of agreement and that means accepting the ideas of others and the pace at which they process our ideas.

The day’s first official activity (well, first after lunch) was a retreat presented by Fr Owen Kearns LC.  Fr Owen has been an inspiration to me ever since I first met him two decades ago.  And he inspired the group today.

He reminded the delegates that Regnum Christi isn’t here to do OUR will or the will of any person in the room.  Regnum Christi is here to do whatever God…Jesus…The Church….wants it to do.  We will achieve that through communion with one another, through love, through trust in the Holy Spirit and each other.

Looking around the convention meeting room, I believe the Holy Spirit brought the right people together.  Say a prayer for these people, your Regnum Christi brothers and sisters in Christ.
