It was a great last day of missions here. We are all tired, but very happy with what we have been able to do and learn here.
A few camp highlights for the girls today were limbo in the games station and face painting in crafts.
The girls were enthusiastic for the last day and we just tried to enjoy the time with them! At the end of the day, before serving their lunch, we had an assembly where all the children sang for us and the sisters thanked us for spending this week with the girls. For them, she said, it is a week that they will remember all their lives. This was brought home to a few of us whom Sr. Alexandra took to show some of the homes where she found the kids for the summer camp. While we were walking back one boy approached Fr. Aaron like he knew him and then started showing him the cheer from last year! When we got back, Fr. Benjamin got the “new priest in Haiti treatment” and was ceremoniously thrown in the pool.
In the afternoon, we all went to the Children’s Home and had a bit more time with our favorite kids there. Time passed quickly but before we left we had a few moments to ask questions of Sr. Mahima, MC. She explained where the joy of the sisters comes from—they spend 24 hours a day being with and touching Jesus in the poor, in the Eucharist and in each other. For them, it is not just a social work. They are called to love with and among the poor—to be at home with them. Learning from their example was a real part of our experience here this week.
After dinner and a bit of free time we had our closing Mass on the roof of the guesthouse and time of adoration and sharing. A lot of people mentioned that they learned a lot about love during this week and although we encountered a lot of pain and suffering here, we also experienced a piece of Heaven…which makes a lot of us want to return again next year!
