Through the darkness to the light

“It is only through shadows that one comes to know the light.”  — St. Catherine of Sienna

Back in 1988, during my year studying Classical Humanities in Spain, myself and a few seminarians ran 10 miles to this tunnel through the mountains (Tunel del engana). It was a tough trek to get there and the murky, muddy dark path in the tunnel was a little spooky without any lights, but we eventually emerged on the other side to see an incredible panorama of green valleys, windy rivers and a bright blue sky…a symbol of the reality of the spiritual life. Trust in God’s plan, especially when he allows you to enter into a brief period of darkness!
