As the Beatles said, “we can work it out.” – Fr Sylvester Heereman LC
I don’t want to shock readers, but in the course of the Regnum Christi Renewal Convention of several days, sometimes people didn’t immediate agree on everything.
Don’t worry; no fisticuffs, profanity, name calling, yelling, screaming or hair pulling. After all, these are practicing members of Regnum Christi.
That also means they do tend to have opinions and are more than willing to express them. So there was passion, enthusiasm and sometimes a bit of heat. All to help in listening to the will of the Holy Spirit.
This morning there was a vigorous debate over an organizational issue. The particular issue wasn’t as significant to me as was the nature of the discussion. (Reminder: this convention makes recommendations and provides insights to the international convention; the territorial convention doesn’t actually make decisions.)
The discussion got pretty spirited. At several points the group was close to voting on the issue, but someone had to make “just one more comment.” Yes, this happened several times and it was clear that various delegates had widely contrasting views. But once the vote was taken and the Holy Spirit’s will was expressed, the debating delegates smiled, laughed and accepted the outcome with joy. I saw a few random acts of hugging.
This ability to debate (even argue), come to a place of consensus and walk away at peace is a true blessing. It is a bit hard to explain, but Fr Sylvester Heereman LC expressed it in cultural terms: As the Beatles said, “we can work it out.”
Fr Sylvester is overseeing the whole lay renewal process and is definitely one of the smartest people in any room he is in, so you might not expect him to cite the Beatles. But it was the perfect way to describe the faith in the room.
No matter how difficult the challenge, in Regnum Christi we can work it out.
Christ, only Christ, only His will. Always!
