“In the evening of life, we will be judged on love alone.” – St. John of the Cross (Christian mystic and poet, 1542-1591)
Legionary priest Fr. Alvaro Corcuera died on Monday in Mexico City after a long battle with brain cancer. He was surrounded by his three sisters and many Legionary priests. I had the privilege of living under the same roof with Father Alvaro in Rome when he was the General Director of the Legion. They were very difficult years for our congregation and he suffered much. My room was one floor above where Father lived, but he would often come up as there was a particular statue of Our Lady that he liked there. One day I stayed home sick while all the other brothers went to the university. I remember leaving my room to get something and as I walked around the corner, I saw Fr Alvaro on his knees praying to Our Blessed Mother like a little boy. I’m sure it was there that he found the strength to keep going, keep smiling and keep giving himself to others despite his almost constant migraines.
Father Alvaro, you always considered yourself the Lord’s donkey. Thank you for humbling bowing your head to straighten the Legion when we were about to shipwreck! You were a true friend and don’t stop praying for me and all my Legionary brothers!
