Don’t be your own cross

“Must you continue to be your own cross? No matter which way God leads you, you change everything into bitterness by constantly brooding over everything. For the love of God, replace all this self-scrutiny with a pure and simple glance at God’s goodness.”–   St. Jane de Chantal

During my seminary years in Spain, I was going through a rough patch with the language barriers and other struggles, and I was certainly becoming my own cross. My spiritual director smiled and said, “Br. Michael, could you please make me a cheeseburger?” The mere fact of getting out of my bubble and focusing on doing a good thing for him, actually helped me out of my crisis…when in a funk, focus on serving the needs of others.
