God notices our struggles

“Dear brothers and sisters, I pray God may open your eyes and let you see what hidden treasures he bestows on us in the trials from which the world thinks only to flee. Shame turns into honor when we seek God’s glory. Present affliction become the source of heavenly glory. To those who suffer wounds in fighting his battles God opens his arms in loving, tender friendship.” — from a letter by Saint John of Avila

Several years ago, I had the grace of giving anointing of the sick to an 85 year old man in DC. He had served in the FBI, he was heavily involved in helping to start the March for Life in DC and was happily married to his wife for over 50 years. He certainly had his share of challenges and trials, but God was clearly rewarding him with a deep peace and fulfillment for his generous response. He fought the good fight and I am confident that Christ was waiting with open arms.
