A thought on Sandy Hook

The tragedy of Sandy Hook is a mystery of evil but it could have been prevented. This troubled young man came from a troubled family background. Did he ever witness the faith and love in action between his mom and dad? Did he learn how to pray and develop a friendship with Christ from a young age? Did he ever experience the love of God in his home? Blessed Pope John Paul II wrote in Familiaris Consortio; “When they become parents, spouses receive from God the gift of a new responsibility. Their parental love is called to become for the children the visible sign of the very love of God, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. The right and duty of parents to give education is essential, since it is connected with the transmission of human life; it is original and primary with regard to the educational role of others, on account of the uniqueness of the loving relationship between parents and children; and it is irreplaceable and inalienable, and therefore incapable of being entirely delegated to others or usurped by others.”

Blessed Pope John Paul also wrote: “When freedom does not have a purpose, when it does not wish to know anything about the rule of law engraved in the hearts of men and women, when it does not listen to the voice of conscience, it turns against humanity and society.” Freedom needs to be inspired to strive for the good…

Complex tragedy with many unanswered questions. But after nearly 20 years of youth work, I have certainly seen the positive effect of strong marriages, fortified by a strong faith and prayer life in the home. Let’s pray for the families of those innocent victims!!
