I’m a simple man. And to me, the Christian faith is simple.
But as a rule, we humans are a complex group and we tend to make things complicated. So there are libraries full of books on Christianity and brilliant theologians spend entire lives studying the finer points of faith.
I work with an amazing crowd of priests and consecrated women, many of whom are bona fide theologians. They read books in Latin and Greek that I can’t understand in English translation. (But I’m pretty good are pretending to understand and sometimes I ask enough questions to sort things out.)
Sometimes a non-theologian comes along and describes my faith in such simple, beautiful terms that I’m nearly reduced to tears. It happened this week when a teenager won a gold medal in the Olympics and thanked God.
I don’t know Gabby Douglas. Everything I’ve learned about her came from the media. But in one moment, she touched my heart. And I doubt I’m alone.
