What are we seeking? What are young people seeking today? What are you personally seeking?
Yesterday we said to love and be love! The Beatles will say “All you need is love…”
But what’s love? So I went around at the dinner table asking the missionary girls: what’s love?
Love is a baby, patience, decision, commitment, compassion, dedication, devotion, loyalty, a mother, sacrifice, God…someone even said food!
Today I spent the day in Sanfil, Home of the Dying. We distributed food for 202 HIV patients – young girls and boys, men and women, tiny babies and the elderly. Next, we went and made “paper tambourines” (you need to work with what you have) with the women and sick children. Some of them didn’t even have the energy to hold onto a crayon.
I couldn’t help but ask myself the question: “WHY? WHERE IS THE LOVING GOD?” The God I gave my life to and for. The God for whom I left behind my country, family, and friends. The loving God that I preach to the girls about.
The question seemed unanswerable. I confess that I went to the Chapel and nothing came; while waiting to be pick up, the Missionaries of Charity had adoration in their parking lot around 300 Haitians were there adoring Him expose in the Blessed Sacrament. I’m there, but still nothing came. But after a few minutes the image of Christ crucified came to my mind… it suddenly all began to make sense.
Love. Total surrender. The reality of abandonment. Finally I understood why, hearing him cry, “I’m dying again for you; I’m suffering for you; what are you going to do?”
My response: to LOVE AND COMMIT MYSELF AGAIN TO YOU.
