Family Time

“The Second Vatican Council, spoke of the family in terms of the domestic church, as the “untouchable sanctuary”. Even the economy with its laws must always consider the interest and the protection of this primary cell of society.” (Pope Benedict XVI, Oct. 15, 2011)

I know the rough economy and sports schedules can make it very difficult to have dinner as a family, but there needs to be a moment each day when the family unit can come together.  My dad was an Executive at Ford Motor Company, and he made a huge effort to wake up at 4:30 AM everyday, so he could be home in time for our 5:30 PM dinner together.  My mom was a 2nd grade teacher and would often start to prepare a nice meal after her 6:15 AM Mass in the morning before going to school.  Mom and dad were able to take the pulse of their 4 children, we were able to share experiences from the day, and in general, this helped us to bond together.  As a kid, I really looked forward to this quality family time, and I am grateful that my mom and dad tried hard to make this work.
