“On Peter’s rescue, “Saint Augustine, imagining that he was addressing the apostle, said, ‘The Lord lowered himself and took you by the hand. On your own, you cannot stand up. Squeeze the hand that comes down to you’ (Enarr. in Ps. 95:7; PL 36, 1233)! Peter walks on the water not because of his own strength but because of divine grace in which he believes. When doubt overwhelms him, when he stops looking at Jesus and is afraid of the wind, when he no longer fully trusts the words of the Master, he moves away from Him and begins to sink.” (Pope Benedict XVI, August 8, 2011)
During my 13 years of priestly ministry, it seems that the most stable and peaceful souls are the ones who fully trust in Christ. Human qualities and disciplined habits can help, but when it comes to grinding out authentic virtue and long lasting fidelity, you simply cannot do it alone! Christ needs to be on your daily schedule and it really comes down to daily Mass and adoration, regular Confession, daily meditation on Sacred Scripture and the rosary. These are the means that most effectively touch the Heart of Christ and pour his love and grace into our hearts.
