Parents are called to be good shepherds

“Tend the flock of God that is your charge, not by constraint but willingly, not for shameful gain but eagerly, not as domineering over those in your charge but being examples to the flock. 1 Peter 5: 2-3

During a recent visit to Rome, I was running a few laps around our soccer field which happens to border a huge pasture with sheep.  The shepherd was gradually moving his sheep from one end of the field to the other…and when one sheep wandered, he sent his sheep dog to bring it back to the group.  He would occasionally whistle and make a few calls and noises to keep his sheep in line.  He seemed to be a meek and humble man who truly cared about all his sheep.  Parents, too, are called to be Good Shepherds to their children, inspiring them with their example and being attentive to keep them on course and in verdant pastures, without being too overbearing or domineering.
