“Does man need God, or can we do quite well without him? When, in the first phase of God’s absence, his light continues to illumine and sustain the order of human existence, it appears that things can also function without God. But the more the world withdraws from God, the clearer it becomes that man, in his hubris of power, in his emptiness of heart and in his longing for satisfaction and happiness, increasingly loses his life. A thirst for the infinite is indelibly present in human beings. Man was created to have a relationship with God; we need him.” (Pope Benedict XVI, September 23, 2011)
Most people are really lonely. They may have a large family, an impressive network of friends, a packed schedule…but deep down inside there is a emptiness that only Christ can fill. I asked a group of psychologists if there was any connection behind most psychological ills and a lack of a spiritual life. They all agreed that if God is not at the center, people desperately try to fill that void with pornography, drinking, drugs, gambling and other addictions…all of which only produces greater dissatisfaction and despair. Our world is screaming for God, and he is asking us to be his ambassadors and clear signs of his love!
