With the Children

Mary Kate with children

We can’t believe that we are already over halfway through our mission! It was another great day and a bit more hot and humid than the last couple of days. At this writing a warm evening rain is coming down as we “connect” with the rest of the world.

We began our day like many others, celebrating Mass with the Missionaries of Charity at the Children’s Home. It was our second Mass in Creole and a group of orphan children joined us. The good thing about this distraction was that the children behaved so well!

After breakfast back at the Guesthouse, we had an hour or so to prepare for our morning at a local school. Joseph, who runs the school, told us to meet him at 10:00 am to explain to him what we had prepared. When we arrived, he was not there, and we were thrown directly into the pre-school classroom with the students. We were glad we had coloring pages, and Mary Jo brought activity books as well. We spent an hour with the little ones and then moved to the older children’s classroom where Christina taught them how to make a simple rosary. We also got to spend a bit of recess time with them and discovered that it is really hard to explain simple games like Duck, Duck, Goose when we don’t speak their language. Needless to say, there was a lot of laughter on both sides.

Fun and games

In the afternoon we went back to spend time with the children, and arrived in time to feed them. We were there for a half an hour before the sisters were leaving for the Wound Clinic, and we went along for one more experience! This time Mary Jo and Mary Kate cleaned and dressed the wounds.

Tomorrow morning we will again visit the Home for the Dying and say goodbye to our friends there.
