The Basketball League

As I was writing my last reflection, I mentioned my dad used to coach our sports’ teams. I remember when we won the local recreational basketball league. My dad has never been a huge basketball fan or player but since he volunteered, he became the head coach.

The only requirement for this league was 2 arms, 2 legs and $200. My dad realized that none of us where ever going to get a university scholarship playing basketball. He decided he wanted to make sure that everyone played and had fun. Some of the other coaches were way more serious about winning.

Since they were serious about winning they realized quickly that there were a few boys who did better so instructed the rest to pass them the ball and let them shoot. My dad instead figured everybody should shoot so we all have a good time. At the beginning of the year we didn’t do so well. However as the year progressed we realized something: we could guard the 1 or 2 who shot well and the other teams couldn’t do much. Instead they had to cover 5 shooters, and when we got tired 5 more came off  the bench.

At the end we won the league and the playoffs, and almost beat the select team from a neighboring community. So often we can think if we just had a superstar yet if everyone contributes as a team produces more spectacular results.
