The Other Side of Spring Break: Satisfying the Hunger

What do we hunger for? Today we had food distribution again, with another 200 people in line. Our missionaries, with a cheerful spirit, filled the sacks and gave them the best of their smiles!

These high school students are hungry for more. What is it? I have been talking one on one with a few of them and they all say the same thing: “Here I’m really happy”, “Here I feel free”, “Here I can be me”, “Here I can talk to God”, “Here I feel good”… Isn’t that what we are all hungry for: happiness, freedom, freedom of spirit, God?

The people in Haiti, those we are serving – -babies, moms, people in the pantry programs — experience true physical hunger. In a way that is “easy” to satisfy, and at least for this week we satisfying it. Spiritually, they seem content, happy, and at peace. They don’t crave what they don’t have. What about us? We always seem to be hungry, craving for more – -the new I-Pod, the newest I-Phone, the latest car…

We should get in the distribution line, just like the Haitians do. We need to get in line to fill our hungry hearts. We need to get in line to receive the Bread of Life!
