Blessed are the poor in spirit

“How blessed are the poor in spirit: the kingdom of Heaven is theirs.”  (Mt 5: 3)

Christ is not referring so much to material poverty, but rather spiritual poverty.  Please see below a few ways to grow in this spirit of internal detachment:

  1. To embrace with love whatever physical suffering may come upon you (and offer it up for a good intention!)
  2. To not put up resistance if you need to move to a different state or country.
  3. To not get too upset when your material possessions are broken or permanently damaged and to be willing to share them with others.
  4. To not waste time and energy worrying about the past or being anxious about the future…trust in Christ and focus on the present!
  5. To stand up for your Faith, even if it means the loss of friends.
  6. To be open to dialogue on non-essential issues.
  7. To let the deep grudges and feelings of resentment go, no matter how painful they may be.
