“How blessed are the poor in spirit: the kingdom of Heaven is theirs.” (Mt 5: 3)
Christ is not referring so much to material poverty, but rather spiritual poverty. Please see below a few ways to grow in this spirit of internal detachment:
- To embrace with love whatever physical suffering may come upon you (and offer it up for a good intention!)
- To not put up resistance if you need to move to a different state or country.
- To not get too upset when your material possessions are broken or permanently damaged and to be willing to share them with others.
- To not waste time and energy worrying about the past or being anxious about the future…trust in Christ and focus on the present!
- To stand up for your Faith, even if it means the loss of friends.
- To be open to dialogue on non-essential issues.
- To let the deep grudges and feelings of resentment go, no matter how painful they may be.
