I’m predicting that German journalism Peter Seewald will have a best seller with his new book, “Light of the World,” a series of interviews with the Holy Father conducted last July. I understand there are many tough questions in the book, including those that deal with the abuse scandal facing the Church.
And just to save all of you digging through the text, check the index of names for “Maciel Degollado, Marcial” and read the question and answer where the Pope summarizes the history of the Fr. Maciel case and points out the future of the Legionaries of Christ. It certainly is in line with the Vatican’s communiqué earlier this year and the recent letters from the Papal Delegate. And to be honest, it very much reflects my own view.
Thanks Jim, I did read the section about Fr. Maciel. In it, Pope Benedict XVI termed Maciel a “false figure” and a “false prophet.” False prophets are people we should stay far away from. And that is why a very deep, thorough reform of the Legion is needed–to get all the bad from this false prophet out. That is also why we should never look with contempt or dismay upon those who leave the Legion. They merely seek to get away from a false prophet and reground themselves in Mother Church, which is their absolute right.
